Great for GeoCaching

Review Date: July 9, 2010
Reviewer: TxGeoTreo,
We bought this GPS receiver about a month ago primarily for GeoCaching and are very pleased with the purchase. The unit has worked flawlessly and we haven't had any trouble with the Vantage Point software as others have complained about. I think most complaints were due to older versions of the units firmware and VP software. Magellan seems to have fixed all the problems, at least we have not encountered any.

The GeoCaching features of this GPS unit are great. You're able to see cache descriptions and hints in the field without needing any printouts or paper notes. Comes in very handy when you're hunting a particularly well hidden cache. You can't, however, see the logs for the cache. Maybe that will come in future versions since the GPX file does include the logs.

With the Vantage Point software, you are able to log directly into the GeoCaching site and download your cache listings. Very convenient and saves the steps of downloading and uploading GPX files.

We haven't tried the NG Topo maps because you can easily load maps from Google for free. I have loaded both Satellite and Terrain maps for the surrounding towns in our area. Having the satellite maps is very nice to see if a cache requires some "bush whacking" or not. You just need to download gMapMaker and TritonRPM, both free apps.

The GPS receiver itself is very accurate, usually within a few yards. That's as good as it gets for current GPS technology. My only complaint, and the reason for only 4 stars, is the battery life. This unit is not rechargeable and goes through 2 AA batteries in about 10 hours of use. My golf GPS is rechargeable and will last about twice as long. Batteries do get expensive at that rate. Getting a satellite lock is also a bit slower than other brands, but that doesn't really bother me and I didn't deduct points for that.

All in all, this is a very fine product and I would recommend it to anyone in the market for mid range GPS receiver. The GeoCaching features make it especially nice for GeoCachers. The price to features ratio is also much better that other competitors.
Magellan Triton 500

Review Date: May 24, 2010
Reviewer: Bikertrash88,
The Triton 500 that I purchased was absolute junk. It lasted about 2 days before the software issues began. I read about some software glitches back in 2007 which cause the screen to freeze. Well guess what? The software has not been fixed yet. The only way to correct the issue was to pull the batteries every time before starting the unit. I called magellan customer support and the return email stated that I should pull the batteries prior to start; not alot of help Magellan. A friend had purchased the Triton 1500 abd he was having some of the same problems that the 500 was having. NOW on to the good news.....AMAZON was absolutely wonderful when it came to exchanging my Triton 500. Because of their customer service, I decided to purchase the Garmin Colorado 400 T with my refund money. The Garmin is an excellent unit, very user friendly!
It worked for 35 days

I received this new unit as a gift and it worked fine for 35 days. Then an "internal error" message started to pop up and close down the unit. I had to send the unit back and am waiting for a replacement.

When the system worked it worked fine. I am new to geocaching so using the system was by trial and error. The manual is poorly written, the website is poorly, designed and good luck if you need to call the call center.

There is a website called tritonforum that is very useful for triton uses.
Consider your needs and usage before choosing your GPS.

I really wanted to like the unit more than I did, because to me GPSs are still just plain cool. I own several of the Magellan Meridian models (with and without compass, regular and marine versions), an old Garmin car GPS, a Garmin 60 Cx, and an iPhone with MotionX GPS (if that counts).

I do use this one occasionally because it is smaller and faster than the old Meridian models, though I've never really gotten "attached" to it. I think the interface could be better based on what I am used to, particularly the once popular Meridians. There is no comparison between this and the 60 Cx, but the Garmin was also 200+ dollars more than this one.

It does have basic trip information that you can use for hiking and biking, I've used it more for the latter to get distance and speed tracked when I didn't want to risk taking the 60 Cx. I haven't compared the barometer readings with another device to see how different they are. Having a compass where you don't have to be moving to see the direction is handy.
Handheld GPS Unit

This item arrived in a reasonable time and seems to work correctly. However, the readings are not very steady on it, and the elevation can vary by a few feet as you hold it. It can also move several feet up or down while you move horizontally, but it seems to settle back to a normal reading after you stop walking.
